Futbol Artist Network Exhibition NYC

I’m pleased to announce that my work will be on display at the Varick Room in downtown NYC, as part of the 5th annual Kicking + Screening Soccer Film Festival. 

During the four day event K+S  will present a soccer-art show in partnership with the Futbol Artist Network, a California-based soccer art collective. Artwork from around the world that depicts the many sides of the beautiful game will be on display and available to buy.

With all the talk recently of his 1000 appearance, I wanted to create an illustration that showed Giggs during his inaugural season (1990–91).

Champions League Artwork for Adidas

In January of this year I was approached by Adidas who asked if I would collaborate with them on a series of prints. The brief for the project was as follows:

“Each year Adidas produces a ‘Finale Ball’ for use in the knock out stages and Final match of the UEFA Champions League. The ‘Finale Wembley 13′ is the 8th such ball to have been released, we believe that this occasion lends itself to a series of bespoke prints / executions which celebrate each specific ball together with the location of each final.”

Escape to Victory – Overhead

The subject matter here is the film ‘Escape to Victory’… or ‘Victory’ for our American cousins. I’ve tried to incorporate Pele’s overhead kick (from the end of the film) into the barbed wire itself, so that the central part of the wire becomes his legs, left arm, neck and head. Hopefully if you look at it long enough you will see what i’m driving at.

Sense and Sensi-bility – Animations

This project began life in the experimental area of my site, essentially I wanted to recreate football’s greatest moments in a Sensible Soccer style. The first piece i did paid homage to Maradona vs Belgium from 1982, but i soon wondered how easy it would be to bring these images to life and create entire sequences.

COPA 2013 Collection

Last year I was absolutely thrilled when I was asked to contribute to COPA Football’s Spring / Summer collection for 2013.

COPA was founded in 1998 when a football addict started a small collection of traditional heavy weight cotton shirts. That collection continued to grow, with their products now found in retail and online shops in over twenty different countries, including their flagship store in Amsterdam (pictured).

Fantasista Exhibition 2013

The Fantasista Exhibition is a celebration of contemporary football art, inspired by the rapid rise of the ‘football artist’ in the digital age.

The organisers have brought together a group of artists (including myself), whose work encapsulates the world’s most popular game. The exhibition will be launching in Spring 2013 at a central London location and promises to be a very high profile event.

This is a piece I’ve been working on recently for next years Fantasista Exhibition, which will be launching in Spring 2013 at a Central London location. The exhibition will celebrate players who (in the organisers own words) “are a symbol of creativity and invention, of imagination and entertainment, of artistry and magic”. So I thought who better to take on than “Zizou”.

Juninho – The Little Fella

As part of the work I’ve been doing for the upcoming Fantasista Exhibition (launching Spring 2013), I decided I couldn’t let things pass without including Middlesbrough’s own Fantasista and number 10, Juninho. For those of you who arent already aware, the height chart shown in the background is a tongue in cheek reference to his nickname on Teesside “The Little Fella”

Four Four Two Appearances

One of my primary goals when starting these illustrations was to try and force my way on to the pages of Four Four Two magazine. To have achieved this goal on three separate occasions has been a dream come true, even culminating in a selection of my work being featured on their office walls.

XI Quarterly – Celtic’s Black Arrow

Last year I was commissioned to produce an illustrative spread for North American Soccer Quarterly – XI. This first issue was entitled “Coming to America”, focusing on how immigration has (and continues to) shape US soccer.

Each issue of XI investigates a single aspect of soccer culture in eleven eclectic and thoughtful ways.

My own contribution was an illustrative piece entitled ‘Celtic’s Black Arrow: A Portrait of Father and Son‘, highlighting the fascinating story of Gil Heron, which i’m proud to say went on to become the lead story of this inaugral issue.

Ian Rush (work in progress)

Thought I’d include this Ian Rush piece I’ve been working on recently. Haven’t quite decided how im going to finish it off yet but it would be good to get some early feedback on it. I’m actually considering doing a series of monochrome designs in this style so stay tuned.

Italian Football – Catenaccio

I decided to have a go at depicting the Italian tactical system known as Catenaccio. Taking the literal translation of the word, i decided to incorporate a door bolt with table football.

The idea being that even if you tried to undo the bolt, the way the players are positioned i.e. their ‘formation’ makes it impossible to open.
