Mannion Illustration

After some favourable reviews on Twitter and the Boro messageboards I’ve decided to add a few more illustrations. Next one is a player described by Tom Finney as “the inside-forward I rated as my perfect partner on the left-flank, he could have taught telepathy.”

Whilst Stanley Matthews referred to him as “the Mozart of football – stylish, graceful, courtly, showing exquisite workmanship with the ball”.

To Boro fans he was simply known as Wilf…

This is a great image of what many have said to be the greatest footballer to wear the beloved Boro shirt. I never had the pleasure of seeing the great man play, but older fans have said great things about this little man from South Bank. I once met this true footballing great outside the Riverside once many many years ago, and asked him for a autograph, i commented to him at the time that he was a true legend, he responed to me with the line “I should shake your hand son, because you fans are the true legends”, i nearly fell over after that remark. This just shows you that Wilf has had no rival to him both as a footballer and a Man. Cheers Wilf
